Career Counselling is the process of understanding and assessing each student’s individual concerns, strengths, interests and capabilities in order to guide them towards making and implementing informed educational and career choices. It enables individuals to gain competencies in three key areas: self-knowledge, exploration of educational and occupational opportunities, and effective career planning.
Who needs Career Counselling?
Since career development is a lifelong process, Counselling can benefit anyone at different stages of life. However, it is particularly valuable for students from Class VIII onwards. Beginning early allows students to make intentional and well-informed decisions about their future, ensuring they are better prepared to face challenges and seize opportunities.
Role of a Career Counsellor
The career counsellor serves as a mentor and guide, offering support in multiple ways:
• Helping students discover who they are, what they aspire to achieve in education, their career, and life.
• Providing a safe space to discuss thoughts, ideas, concerns, and feelings regarding academics and career choices, while helping to organise and make sense of these reflections.
• Identifying factors that influence career development and evaluating interests, abilities
and values.
• Guiding students in locating reliable resources and career information.
• Assisting in determining next steps and formulating concrete plans to achieve personal and professional goals.
