Delhi Public School Indirapuram organized a trip to Germany from 20th April 2018 to 7th May 2018, under the 12th Indo-German Exchange Programme 2018. 10 students of the school accompanied by one teacher visited the partner German school, Schloss Realschule Gaildorf to gain experience about the academic pattern and teaching-learning process in German schools. The three-week long stay with the host families exposed the Indian students to the culture, cuisine and traditions of Germany and helped foster life-long bonds of friendship.

The students of DPS Indirapuram embarked on their fairy tale journey to the land of blackforest and cuckoo clocks in the early hours of 20th April, 2018. On reaching Stuttgart airport, they were given a warm welcome by their German counterparts. After settling down comfortably with their host families over the weekend, the students were given a formal welcome by the partner school on Monday, 2nd April, 2018. They visited the Mayor’s office in Gaildorf, where they were extended warm welcome and asked to share their initial impressions about Germany.

During their stay the students were taken to a number of historical sites and landmark places in Germany. As the students walked through the cobbled streets of medieval towns like Schwabisch hall, Gaildorf and Rothenburg, they were acquainted with German history and heritage. The quaint country cottages, homely shops filled with curios and traditional handicrafts, the aroma of freshly baked cookies and ‘snowballs’, people dressed in traditional German attire, ‘dirndl’, transported them to a bygone era.

The students also visited the German city of Stuttgart, where they witnessed a grand musical, ‘Bodyguard’, based on the famous singer, Whitney Houston’s superhit movie. The Mercedes Benz museum at Stuttgart was also a great attraction for the students, as they saw several Mercedes vehicles down the years displayed in the galleries and also learnt about the evolution and growth of this giant car manufacturer.

During the course of their stay, the children attended classes in Schloss Realschule Gaildorf and interacted with the German students. They worked on this year’s project topic ‘Tales and Fables of Germany and India’ and gathered valuable information from their counterparts. They also presented a Radio show on the Culture, Cuisine and Customs of India and Germany on Radio St. HorFunk which was broadcast all over the world.

The last weekend in Germany also proved to be a memorable one, as the students visited the Lake of Constance. The serene blue water of the lake and its pristine surroundings left the students refreshed and invigorated. Along the German side of the lake, history, art and culture meet the breath taking scenery dotted with vineyards and gothic churches. The children visited the Zepplin Museum beside the lake and gained insight into the history of warships. They also took a trip down the lanes of history as they visited the ancient settlements of the Stone Age in the Bodensee region and learnt about their means of livelihood.

On the way back from Bodensee, the students visited the historic town of Ulm, where they went for a river cruise on the Danube River and saw the Ulm Minister, the tallest church in the world with a steeple measuring 530 feet. Going up the narrow spiral stair case of the steeple was indeed an exciting experience for the children and the panoramic view from the top was simply stunning.

The dream stay in Germany ended with an informal barbeque and a grand farewell organized by the host families and the partner school. The visit to Germany was a lifetime’s experience for the students, the lush green countryside, the azure skies, the picturesque landscape, the verdant woods, Spring Fests, Cheese markets, May Poles, transported the children into a fairy tale world and gave them a glimpse into the rich culture, and traditions unique to Germany. The programme truly enriched the students, promoting exchange of ideas, thought processes, interactions and above all forging ties across countries, cultures and continents.
