The Four Pillars of Learning

D.P.S. Indirapuram organized a special screening of Dr. Karan Singh’s famous speech on the “Four Pillars of Learning”. The Pillars of learning were drafted at the UNESCO’S world summit in order to make learning a more holistic process. The central idea behind it is that learning is a dynamic Life Long process that carries on from the ‘wowb to the tomb’
The first pillar of leaning is ‘Learning to know’- the purpose of learning is to acquire knowledge, know about things more and more, one should have insatiable thirst for learning.
The second pillar is ‘Learning to do’ – all knowledge is futile if it cannot be applied for practical day to day purposes. As Dr. Karan Singh said in his speech, “of what use is it if a nation has only scientists and technocrats who can launch space ships, but does not have people who can repair television sets and refrigerators.” All learning should thus necessarily be accompanied by work experience as both go hand in hand.
The third pillar of leaning is ‘Learning to live together” - Learning should nurture or inculcate certain values that will teach people to live more harmoniously. The values can be classified as family, societal, inter-religious and environmental values. Dr. Karan Singh emphasized on certain qualities like patience, tolerance, cleanliness, cooperation which are the basis of healthy family, societal and global relationships.
The fourth pillar of learning is ‘Learning to be’ – Learning should bring out the best in the self. It should help one to develop to the fullest of his potential so that one can evolve into a complete ‘being’.
These four pillars of learning balance the future of our coming generations and without one the whole structure would collapse. The teachers and educators thus, have a great role to play as they shape the destiny of the younger generation, it is they who can impart proper learning to their students so that they can finally learn ‘to be’ worthy global citizens.

She lauded the efforts of DPS Society for taking initiative in this direction as it provided a platform to hear the opinions of all stake holders in school education namely students, teachers and parents.

A group song entitled ‘Jeene Do’ presented by the school students set the mood for the discussion to ensue. The panel discussion explored the areas like the class-disruption by few attentions – seeking students, the various factors pressurizing the young adults of today, the changing norms, the cross-cultural influences, the over-zealous parents and teachers and the desire of the young to be allowed the freedom to BE THEMSELVES.
Views were expressed frankly and opinions were shared freely as each group tried to present their perspective. It was indeed an open-ended discussion with open-ended possibilities. The guest speakers Dr Vasantha Patri and Dr Meghna Bansal gave their expert opinion from time to time helping all to realize that though freedom of students as individuals is desirable, it cannot be and should not be at the cost of good governance and the school rules should be respected.

A volley of questions and comments poured in the inter-active session following the panel-discussion. It was desired that both parents and teachers should play an important role in inculcating positive behaviour and help their children make informed choices. The discussion concluded on the note that counseling and proactive measures must be taken to handle all issues concerning student misbehavior and indiscipline. It was also felt that teachers and students must develop mutual respect and give each other space, and teachers must also evolve new teaching methodologies to sustain the interest of their pupils.

Report of Educational trip to London
(21st June to 27th June)
Eight students of DPS Indirapuram and Mrs. Sangeeta Hajela, Senior Mistress, left for London on 21st June for an educational tour planned and organized by E F Tours, Delhi. All were very excited at the prospect of visiting this second largest capital of the world with unparalleled historical and cultural past. A couple of days before our departure, hail and rain were reported from the city, and hence, we reached London well stocked with woolens and raincoats, only to discover clear sun-lit sky. The Londoners welcomed us saying we had brought sunshine to their cold and wet city!
Attempting to see London in six days resulted in a very tightly packed itinerary which enabled us to see almost all landmark sights like Big Ben, Parliament House, London Eye, Tower of London, Greenwich, National Maritime Museum, Buckingham Palace, Lords Cricket Stadium, Wembley Stadium, Thorpe Amusement Park, Trafalgar Square, Piccadily Circus etc. We had many interesting moments as the guides pointed out the school where Daniel Radcliff of Harry Potter fame studied, or the Church where Lady Diana got married or, when we stood with our feet on either side of the Greenwich Meridian, dividing the world in eastern and western Hemisphere. The glitter of our Kohinoor and other jewels displayed at Tower of London, is also still very fresh in our mind. The cruise down the Thames offered a breathtaking view of the London skyline and neatly arranged row houses with sloping red-roofs. The innumerable trips on the London Underground and the ride on the red-bus surely left us tired but still asking for more!
The shopping at Oxford Street and the Bazaars of Bayswater, indeed made our bags heavier and pockets lighter! Though ‘Jack the Ripper walk’ did not scare us at all, it was more than made up in the scary gallery of the world-famous Madam Tussauds Wax Museum. Getting clicked with a galaxy of luminaries and rubbing shoulders with the high and mighty indeed gave us many a picture-perfect moment! Finally, the taxi-ride down the ‘The Spirit of London’ section of Madam Tussauds, beautifully show-cased the strategic role London has played in shaping the world history.
Surely, the tour, aptly entitled ‘London in Depth’ will be long cherished by Pranav Gupta, Prithvi Gupta, Aditya Gupta, Shikha Kathuria, Manvi Kathuria, Urvi Ahlawat, Siddharth Arora, Aishwarya Anuraj and Mrs Sangeeta Hajela. Having forged a new bond with the city, we’ll all perhaps salute India and say ‘Namaste London’ in the same breath for at least some months to come!

The delegation was greeted and given a warm reception at the Stuttgart Airport, the memory of which would forever remain etched in our hearts and mind.
Our children were given the opportunity to conduct a live Radio Show, entirely by themselves; which they did exceptionally well. It involved a series of very interactive and fun filled sessions in which they talked about India and its great culture. This really helped to boost up confidence in our children.
During their stay they visited a number of places in Germany. The students visited the following places;
Overnight Trip to the Lake of Konstanze. (30.04.2010)
-
Visit to the Zeppelin Museum and Ulm Munster (01.05-2010)

Trip to Heidelberg(11.05.2010)
Apart from attending the regular school they were also taken out for nature walk; to expose them to the flora and fauna in those climes. It was a new concept and interesting experience for all of us.
An impressive assembly was organised for our students in Germany, and our children performed flawlessly. The special Indian dance sequence performed by our students enthralled the audience with many of them citing interest to know and learn more about Indian dances on their visit to India.
The German students were eager to learn more about India and its culture from the Indian students. They were happy conversing in English with their Indian partners and felt that it helped them improve their language skills too.
This enriching experience opened new horizons of learning for the entire team’s wholesome development. This was certainly a great opportunity to hone their skills and develop their personality, helping them gain headway towards becoming global citizens.
It was a memorable period, with relationships built between families and cultural bonds reinforced, and now we are longing to meet and renew our ties of friendship when our friends will visit India later this year.
School Trip to Egypt
(June 3rd – June 11th 2010)
The school organised an educational trip to Egypt from 3rd June to 11th June 2010. Ten students, Ashish Malik, Avnee Goel, Bhuvan Goel, Chirag Nagpal, Lavi Choudhry, Malika, Milind Goel, Parth, Raghav Agarwal and Shrey Juneja with Senior Mistress, Mrs. Meeta Sharma and Mrs. Geeta Shankar left for Cairo (via Abu Dhabi) on 3rd June 2010.
In Cairo, watching the Sound and Light show in the back drop of the Pyramids and the Sphinx was a breath taking experience for the students. The students visited the ancient monuments and were excited to learn that the pyramids were an ancient monument even for Jesus Christ! With this perspective they appreciated how amazing it was that the monuments had stood in the desert for centuries, weathering the desert winds and storms. The visit to The Cairo Museum was a unique experience for the students – to see the gold caskets, the glittering furniture and jewellery of king Tutan-khamen in such pristine condition!
The students reached Aswan by an overnight train. At Aswan they saw the high dam (and the placid Lake Nasser) built on the River Nile and they were told how the dam had helped control the floods in Egypt. An ancient monument, Abu Simbel had to be moved to another location and built brick by brick as it was getting submerged because of the dam.
The two and a half day cruise on the River Nile was an enchanting experience for the children. Equipped with a deck, a TT table and a swimming pool, the boat was thoroughly enjoyed by the young tourists!
The first stop, after the boat sailed was at Kom Ombo and the Temple of Sobek and Haroeris, the Music Gods. The boat then stopped at Ed fu (another ancient monument). It was a learning experience for the students to cross the Esna Lock – to see how the levels of the Nile water were adjusted through the rushing in and out of the water through the gates / lock.
The boat reached Luxor (the ancient city of Thebes) and the students visited the Valley of the Kings (tombs of Ramses VI), Queen Hatchepsut and the magnificent temple of Karnak.
On 8th June the students disembarked and reached Hurgada, a resort in the Red Sea. The students thoroughly enjoyed a picnic on the boat with the beautiful blue waters of the Red Sea, the dolphins, the sea gulls and watching snorkelling!
In the final lap, students left Hurgada for Cairo by road. The road journey was interesting and exciting with the Sinai desert on one side and the Red Sea on the other. The children were told about the building of the Suez Canal and how it brought Europe so close to Africa through the Meditteranean Sea.
After a very interesting, educative and enjoyable trip, the students and teachers boarded the flight and reached Delhi in the wee hours of 11th June, 2010.
INDO-FRENCH STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMME
(20th May – 30th May, 2010)
India is fast becoming a very important part of the global village and education is coming out of the confines of the classrooms resulting in the enrichment of the human mind through healthy interactions and exchange of cultures.
A step towards this direction was the Indo-French Exchange Programme between College Anatole France & DPS Indirapuram. 13 Students of DPS Indirapuram, Kavya Bhardwaj, Aishwarya Chakravarty, Ashima Gupta, Akansha Gupta, Akshit Garg, Karan Gupta, Neha Jain, Shubham Jain, Tanushree Jain, Mantej Singh, Shubham Sharma, Mohini Singh, Vishvesh, the French Teacher, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar Jha and the school Vice Principal, Mrs. A. Choudhary were part of the delegation which set off to France from 20th to 30th May, 2010 for the Exchange Programme in close collaboration with MILNA, an association which helps in the understanding and appreciation of the French culture.
The Exchange Programme was especially meaningful because French is one of the languages taught as a part of the seven language formula practiced in the school.
The delegation was warmly received by Mr. Reynold Dumalte, the Principal of the school as well as host families. There was a formal Welcome Function by the Mayor of Ronchin, Mr. Alain Rabary and as a mark of respect for India, the Indian Tricolour was hoisted in the Mayor’s Office for the first time in Ronchin’s history . Befitting the occasion, the DPS Indirapuram students sang ‘Jai Ho’ from the Oscar-winning movie,
‘Slum dog Millionaire’, stirring patriotic emotions in many a heart.
The students attended French classes, played Football and Badminton Matches and visited beaches like the ‘Mer du Nord’ in Brussels. They boarded the TGV (Train Grand Vitesse) which is the fastest train in the world.
The Vice Principal and two students cooked an Indian meal comprising Tandoori chicken, rice and cauliflower in the school cafeteria. The French teacher Mr. Sanjeev Kr. Jha taught Hindi to the French Children. This gave the taste of India to the host school. There was a lot of media coverage in the local newspaper of the visit.
The visit to Paris and the world famous Louvre Museum housing the famed ‘Mona Lisa’ was an experience of a life time.
The Indo-French Exchange Programme – the first of the kind with France for our school brought the people of the two nations closer and was a learning experience for the students.
We parted on the notes of ‘Au revoir’ as we look forward to the reciprocal visit from our French friends in October this year.
